Why do a traineeship?

Traineeships offer an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain valuable workplace skills, technical knowledge, and qualifications while earning an income. This arrangement benefits both trainees, who can learn on the job, and employers, who can develop their workforce. Trainees of any age, including those still attending school, are eligible to participate.

The qualifications obtained through traineeships can be acquired through two primary methods:

  • The first involves receiving support from a trainer or assessor who regularly visits the workplace to provide guidance.
  • The second option allows trainees to attend independent study classes at Vital Training Solutions, offering the flexibility to combine both approaches as needed.

Traineeship program operates on a competency-based framework, enabling completion to be flexible and agreed upon by all parties involved once the necessary skills (competencies) have been accomplished. You get the knowledge and practical skills from on-the-job training and experience you gain in your workplace.

Notably, traineeships are formal agreements officially recognized by the NSW Government and involve a contractual arrangement between the employer and the trainee. For more detailed information, interested parties can refer to Training Services NSW.

Who can do a traineeship?

When thinking about traineeships, the initial assumption might involve individuals who have recently finished school. However, it’s important to recognise that in modern times, traineeships have expanded their scope to include not only high school students, but also newcomers entering the workforce, those transitioning careers, individuals rejoining the workforce, and even mature adults aiming to give formal structure and recognition to their skills.

To be eligible for participation in a traineeship program within NSW, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • an Australian citizen, or
  • a foreign national with permanent residency, or
  • a New Zealand passport holder who has been a resident in Australia for more than six months, or
  • a person who holds a visa that is identified by Training Services NSW as being eligible.

If you hold an existing qualification, you are still eligible to enrol in a traineeship program. This is regardless of whether you have completed a previous program or have completed a higher education qualification. This is allowed under the condition that your proposed traineeship leads to a distinct vocational outcome*. In cases where the vocational outcome aligns, the program must be of a higher qualification level than the individual’s prior apprenticeship, traineeship, or qualification completed.

You can learn more about this by visiting the Training Services NSW traineeship policy here. Alternatively, get in touch with our team here.

If you would like to enroll into a qualification under our Traineeship program, you can submit an enrolment enquiry and one of our team will be in touch.
